LMNHS provides social, educational, cultural and recreational programs and initiatives that strengthen neighbourhood life for a diverse group of community members.

Job Description

Under the direction of the Summer Program Coordinator, the Summer Program Child and Youth Workers are responsible for supporting programming for 24 children, ages 5-12yrs that focuses on academic, physical, and cultural literacy with targeted STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) learning outcomes for the 2023 Summer Camp Program. This is a temporary full-time position for 9 weeks starting on June 26th and ending on August 25th. The Summer Program Child and Youth Workers bring energy and enthusiasm to the Children and Youth team in addition to a passion for working with children and youth.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist in the implementation of a fun, safe and enriching day camp.
  • Facilitate games and activities for children 5-12yrs.
  • Mentor youth volunteers to support programming.
  • Work closely with the Summer Program Coordinator in developing social and life skills through positive role modelling and learning activities.

  • Partner with community organizations to provide enrichment and cultural identity activities.

  • Assist in the supervision of children and volunteers.
  • Develop trusting relationships with children, youth volunteers, and their families by using an asset-based and trauma-informed approach.

  • Participate in community events related to Summer Camps.
  • Assist in the evaluation of activities and support Summer Program Coordinator with final reports on the successes and challenges of the activities; provide recommendations on how to incorporate further sustainable literacy-based and STEAM principles and practices into programs.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifiications, Skills and Experience:
  • University or College student or graduate within social work, psychology or in the social services area, preferred.

  • Previous experience working with children (ages 5-12) and program planning and delivery.

  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, supervisory, interpersonal, and planning skills.

  • Demonstrates ability to work independently and in a team environment, takes initiative and is resourceful.

  • Actively ensure safety of children and staff through following safety guidelines from WCB, Public Health Authorities, communicating risk management procedures.

  • Ability to motivate a team of volunteers.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment.
  • Self-motivated and takes initiative.
  • Punctual and reliable team player.
  • Valid First Aid & CPR/AED Level C certification or willingness to obtain.
  • Criminal record check is required.
  • Ability to speak a second language an asset.
  • Complete other tasks as required.

This position is supported by the Canada Summer Jobs program and applicants must meet the following program requirements:

  • Is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
  • Is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and
  • Is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/ territorial legislation and regulations.

Days: Monday to Friday, 35 hours/week
Anticipated working hours: 9:00 AM-4:00 PM
Rate of Pay: $19.00/hr + 6% vacation pay
Start date: June 26th, 2023.
End date: August 25th, 2023.
